We’ve started with the very first column that came out in April of 1998, and we will be putting up additional ones on a regular basis. For those who are new to the gang at Slim Shambles Auto Repair, these back issues will help introduce you to Slim and the boys, and show you why this column has had such a long and popular run. It’s now in its 12th year…

So click the Archives button at the top of the page…check back often. We will have lots for you to read and enjoy!

Latest update on book sales

Posted By on January 28, 2010

Here is the latest map showing where our books sales are happening. As you can tell, lots of action in BC and Ontario, but we’re also getting more orders from the Prairies as well as the Maritime provinces.

The different marker colours represent the number of books sent to each address – for example, red is 1 book, white is 7 books.Map Jan 28 10

One month until the Olympics begin…

Posted By on January 12, 2010

Being from British Columbia, the big thing on most people’s minds is the upcoming Olympics in Vancouver, set to begin in exactly one month. Up here in Slumberland (about 5 hours from Vancouver) things are a bit more subdued, almost lethargic in some cases. In fact, when I asked Buck Pincher what his favorite Olympic sport was, all I got was a blank look. I suspect that if they had a category for billiards, he might turn on his big screen TV, but since they don’t he’ll probably just sleep through it.

But the torch relay is coming through town sometime in the next two weeks, and I’m sure Mayor Dewgood will be out in full force, showing enough pearly whites to blind a polar bear.

As for me, I’m just plugging away at sending out books. The Post Office is starting to recognize me now…not a good thing, perhaps, since they went and upped the postal rates yesterday. I guess they heard about how many copies are still parked in my basement and figure that I’m a pretty good cash cow for the foreseeable future…

Welcome to 2010, everyone!

Book Signings at the Mall…

Posted By on December 23, 2009

We just finished our second book signing at Cherry Lane Mall in Penticton last night…a great response from local people. Some were waiting to get their copies when we arrived to set up at 4p.m., alerted to the event by a great article on the book in the local newspaper, the Penticton Herald.

Orders for A Fine Day for a Drive are also starting to come in from the US, no doubt due to our advertisement in MOTOR Magazine this month – and to the reprints of The Car Side column on their website. Thanks to Editor John Lypen for his support of my column and the book.

In other news, a large tire chain ordered 22 copies to give to all their store managers in the area, so word is getting out.

Book Review by the North Shore News, North Vancouver

Posted By on December 2, 2009

The North Shore News, a mainstream newspaper in North Vancouver,  just did a book review of A Fine Day for a Drive in their November 27th edition. The Car Side column was a regular feature in the auto section of the paper for a number of years, so we really appreciate the great book review that they gave us!

Read the details here:

So where is the book going?

Sales Map Nov 26I’ve been using a free app called to keep track of book sales. As you can see from this screen shot a few days ago, most of our book orders are to folks in Ontario.

Hey, Prairie Provinces, how about a little more support?! Come to think of it, I don’t see anything from Newfoundland yet either…

The different colour markers symbolize different numbers of books shipping to that address. It’s been great to see a number of shops buying copies for all their staff. Christmas must be coming!

Sales Report…

Well, it’s exciting to see copies of A Fine Day for a Drive heading out the door and into the post office! So far we’ve mailed copies all across Canada, as far as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (I keep an online map showing where the books are going, and it’s starting to get a lot of markers on it).

A number of readers are ordering multiple copies to use as Christmas gifts. One local shop called me up to drop off a copy, and when I arrived they actually wanted five! Of course, that means they got an extra copy free (see Slim’s Bookstore for details on that).

In the promotion and advertising department, I just finished doing a Shaw Cable TV interview which will air within the next week locally (Okanagan Valley), and a newspaper in North Vancouver (the North Shore News) requested a copy for reviewing purposes – reprints of The Car Side column were published there for a number of years. Also here in the Okanagan Valley, Okanagan Life magazine (who I occasionally write for) is doing a book review in their Nov/Dec issue.

Canadian Technician did a great write-up in their Out & About section of the November issue (thanks, David!), and Motor Magazine (US) is going to publish an ad to promote the book as well. Two local bookstores (Coles Books and Lifesong Books, both in Penticton) are now selling copies of the book, and I’ll be doing an author signing on the evenings of December 18th and 22nd in Cherry Lane Mall.

All in all, we’re pretty happy with the response, and we know that as more folks hear that the book is now available for shipping, it will only get busier. Thanks everyone - I hope you enjoy the drive!

The Book Has Arrived!

Delivery01Delivery02Yes, the day we’ve all been waiting for has come…on November 5th, a large transport truck backed up to my driveway and a cheerful driver named Peter unloaded boxes and boxes of books with his self-powered pallet jack. Unfortunately, the pallet jack wouldn’t fit through my basement door, so I got to carry them in by hand cart – all 84 boxes of them!

Delivery04So we’re loaded for bear, and ready to ship out your own personal copy. Place your order today, and we’ll get it to you as fast as snail-mail can travel.

Delivery03For those of you who live nearby (in the Okanagan Valley of BC), just send me an e-mail and I’ll do my best to hand-deliver your copy. It’ll save you the shipping fees! It’ll also give me the chance to visit your shop and see how things are going.

Latest news…

It’s been exciting to see the book orders starting to come in via PayPal, even though we are still waiting for the books to arrive from the printers (Friesens Printing in Manitoba). I just had word that the shipping date from the plant is this coming Friday, October 30th, so that’s great news. The shipment will arrive the following week, and as soon as it does we’ll begin mailing out copies. So far, we have orders from New Brunswick to Victoria to Jasper and more.

Place your order today and be one of the first to get your copy of A Fine Day for a Drive…and thanks for the great support!

On another note, I’ve added a page of photos of custom cars that you’ll find interesting. We have a lot of car shows and rod runs every summer here in the Okanagan Valley, so I thought folks would like to see the amazing examples of hard work and labours of love! So check out our Cool Car Pics page…hope you enjoy them.

Finally, although we’ve had people signing up on our notification list (which puts them into a draw for a free book), we’ve not had anyone take advantage of Contest #1, where you could win a free book by sending in a repair story for use in the Car Side column. There’s still time left, so send in those stories to become eligible for your free copy of A Fine Day for a Drive! Check out the Free Book Contest tab for details…

A Fine Day for a Drive…Arriving soon!

A Fine Day for a Drive by Rick Cogbill

Based on the popular automotive humour column The Car Side, the book A FINE DAY FOR A DRIVE takes us back to the early years of Slim Shambles’ career, to the time when he first opened his shop and hired his infamous staff.

While the monthly column was focused on actual technical problems and solutions,  A Fine Day for a Drive goes behind the scenes and brings out the long-awaited stories of Slim Shambles, his wife Cookie, his friend Buck Pincher, and the hilarious antics that go on in the town of Slumberland. It’s fun-time reading for the whole family.

You’ll meet Mayor Dewgood, Baldy the Barber, and even Slim’s dog, Buddy. You’ll visit Rolph’s Diner, climb Hunchback Mountain, and swim a lap or two in the pool over at The Happy Peasant Motel, “…a fine establishment where weary travelers can stop for the night and find fresh incentive for moving on the next morning.”

Whether it’s riding along on Slim’s first date with Cookie McDream or wearing protective headgear as you sit through a local Council meeting, there’s a whole book full of adventures awaiting you between the covers of A Fine Day for a Drive.

Here are some sample chapter titles to look forward to:

  • Don’t Bank On It ~ A Slim View On Gardening ~ A Fine Day For A Drive
  • Stairway To Heaven ~ Development Daze ~ Cookie’s Valentine ~ All Makes And Models
  • The British Are Coming ~ Meet The Parents ~ Name That Toon ~ A Romantic Evening For Five
  • In Pursuit Of Culture ~ Danger: Curves Ahead ~ The Chicken Safari ~ Bean Counting ~ Sneaky Waters Run Deep…and many, many more!
